Miami has long been recognized as one of America’s most popular holiday destinations. With Art Deco architecture along the famed beach front and a wealth of cultural and culinary attractions Miami is more than just sun, sand, surf and great cocktails.
One of the best cultural and culinary attractions and destinations in Miami is without a doubt little Havana. The area is home to thousands of Cuban families (and their descendants) who fled Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power (in 1959).
The smells from the cigar stores and the Cuban inspired eateries making classic dishes for the hordes of tourists and a healthy helping of locals makes this a must visit destination when in Miami.
And the Cuban influence is carried over at the famous Versailles restaurant where the equally famous Cubano sandwich continues to wow guests. Toasted, filled to the brim with slices of ham, roast pork and Swiss cheese this sis a simple delight which is more than a sum of its parts.
The Wynwood Arts District in Miami is another place that will reward those in search of the eclectic and interesting. However once there any visitor would be remiss if they did not make a stop at one (or more) of the craft breweries to be found in the area. Try The Butcher Shop for artisan sausages and a great selection of beers or pop in to Wynwood Brewing Company, J. Wakefield Brewing, or Concrete Beach Brewery (which has great indoor and outdoor seating options). The choice is yours – but really, why choose? You have the whole day – visit them all.
For those with a bit of retail shopping therapy in mind a visit to the Morris Lapidus designed Lincoln Road Mall is an absolute must. Not only is the shopping great with cozy and stylish coffee shops and great dining options at hand for refreshment, but there’s also a helping of culture with the Colony Theatre.
For those who want to escape the pulsating nightlife and daytime distractions of Miami proper there is always Key Biscayne. The most northern of the Florida Keys it offers incredible beaches and two waterfront parks. For those who want to take in the beauty there is also Crandon Park where barbecue facilities and picnic areas are perfect for a day out.
Miami is one of those rare cities that can offer the visitor something no matter what they are interested in – visit it soon.
